Mayor Scandal Part II

Apparently, Baltimore isn't the only city with a misbehaving mayor.

The former Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, has been involved in lies, murder, and scandal for years. Last year, he was charged with eight felonies, including perjury and misconduct in office. He then fled the country to ask the mayor of Windsor (the city on the other side of the Canadian border) for money in exchange for the tunnel linking the two cities, earning him jail time and two extra felony counts for assaulting a law officer. In his trial, he agreed to serve time, pay $1 million in restitution to the City of Detroit, and lose his pension from the State of Michigan. But of course, he couldn't just stop there.

On March 24th, his attorney filed a motion saying he couldn't afford to pay the $6000/month restitution payments. On April 9th, he decided to confirm himself to be the worst mayor anywhere ever by paying $15,770 for plastic surgery for his wife, $75,000 for a lease on a home in Texas, and $10,000 (from his nonprofit organization) for rent on a condominium.

Wow.

  1. Wow, I'm surprised this was allowed to go for so long and that he won a second term. a little troublesome for the government in Detroit.

  2. I'll say. It's almost laughable at how corrupt a public official could possibly be... and to think, like Dan said, that this sort of nonsense goes on over years without anyone ever finding out. How long is it going to be before this goon is extradited back to the US and scheduled for prosecution?

  3. This is rediculous but unfortunately I'm not that surprised. Obviously the record this particular politician has accumulated is one of a kind, but it seems that lately poiticians have really been gettin themsleves into trouble. From Larry Craig to Mark Foley it amazes me at how stupid and corrupt some of the more influential people in this country can be. Sadly, struggling cities such as Detroit are the ones that ultimately pay the price for the mistakes of both the mayor and the people around him who didn't notice what was going on.

  4. Is it sad that I've begun getting my political scandals utterly mixed up? A while back, I was sitting around with someone trying to remember the name of "hiking in the Appalachian" guy (Mark Sanford). William Jefferson? No, he's the guy with the cash in his freezer. Rod Blagojevich? No, he's "f---in' golden" dude. This guy may have competition for the "worst mayor" title.
